1958 Pre-Season Tour and Formation of Everton A.F.C.

Everton F.C.'s Pre-Season Tour in Ireland

In the summer of 1958, Everton F.C., under the management of Ian Buchan, embarked on a pre-season tour in Ireland. One notable match took place on August 13, 1958, where Everton defeated Cork Hibernian, a League of Ireland side, with a score of 3-2. According to the Liverpool Daily Post, Everton dominated the first half and went into halftime with a three-goal lead.

Everton’s Performance: The team was particularly strong in their attack, with wingers Jimmy Harris and Eddy O’Hara (a new signing from Falkirk) highlighting their speed and accurate shooting, constantly challenging the Cork Hibernian defence.

Second Half Comeback: Cork Hibernian fought back in the second half, reducing Everton's led to a single goal.

Formation of Everton A.F.C. in Cork

In 1958 same time Everton FC came to Cork, Connie Long, Mick Dalton, and Andy McCallum, former members of the now-defunct Cork team Crusaders AFC, were eager to establish a new club. The presence of Everton F.C. in Cork inspired them to name their new club Everton A.F.C.

Meeting with Everton F.C.: Long and Dalton reportedly met with officials from Everton F.C. during their training sessions in Cork and sought permission to use the name "Everton."

Everton F.C.'s Blessing: The Toffees granted their permission, donated a football, and wished the new club success.


 Establishment:

Everton A.F.C. of Cork was officially formed in 1958, starting with one Junior team participating in the Munster Junior League.

1962-63 Winter and Further Matches

In 1963, Everton visited Cork again and played against local Irish teams. One of the notable matches during this tour was against Cork Celtic, a prominent football team in the League of Ireland at the time. The match drew a large crowd, and Everton showcased their talent, giving Irish fans a glimpse of the team's potential for the season ahead. After seeing this tour Everton AFC decided to start a schoolboys section.

Founding of the Schoolboys Section in 1963

In 1963, Everton A.F.C. expanded its structure by establishing a Schoolboys section. This development was significant for the club as it focused on nurturing young talent and promoting football among the youth in Cork City.
